This video explores how the unique structure of your hips and personal biomechanics can dramatically influence your skiing performance and technique. The insights shared here are based on information relayed to me by medical experts, combined with my experience applying these concepts to skiing. We’ll cover: The basic bony structures of the hip and how they relate to movement on the slopes. How different hip shapes can affect your skiing and what this means for your technique. Practical tips and movements to experiment with for better control and performance. This video is to bring awareness to the diversity of body mechanics and provide actionable solutions to help you ski better.
In this video, Reilly McGlashan dives into the “Stork Turn,” a classic and highly effective ski exercise designed to enhance your balance on the outside ski. Reilly breaks the exercise down into five progressively challenging levels, making it accessible for skiers of various abilities while offering an opportunity for advanced skiers to test themselves. The “Stork Turn” is a staple in anyones arsenal aimed at improving various aspects of skiing, including balance over the outside ski, control along the length of the ski, and steering smoothness. Each level intensifies the challenge, requiring increased precision and focus. As you progress, you’ll hone your ability to balance effectively over the outside ski, maintain a stable and aligned upper body, and develop smoother, more effortless steering.
I often demonstrate to guests the different stance widths at which one can ski. My personal preference is to ski with a narrower stance; my rationale for this is that a narrower stance gives me greater versatility when it comes to skiing all sorts of terrain, such as moguls, powder, and crud. While a wider stance may prevent me from skiing certain types of terrain, there is no terrain that I cannot ski with a narrow stance. However, if one's technique is limited to one particular stance, it can be a problem. The ability to switch up stances is a sign of a more experienced skier. With that being said, if a skier has not yet learned how to ski with a narrow stance while still maintaining good edge control, skiing around on flat skis with a narrow stance can also be an issue - although this is not necessarily an issue with the narrow stance itself, as a lack of edge angle can occur with a wide stance as well.
Practicing different speed variations on intermediate terrain to get the edge timing right in different parts of the turn is very important, and it can also be a lot of fun. If you want to learn more about short turn skiing and the finer details, I have compiled a huge array of exercises on the new Projected Productions series "Short Turns Mistakes and Corrections". All these turns were performed on the Original + Mod 6X 175cm 16m Radius ski, which is an excellent and versatile ski for all types of skiing. I love it!
